3D Dental Imaging Technology in Santa Barbara

At See Me Smile Dental, we are committed to using the latest dental technology to provide you with the best dental care experience. Fortunately, we have many modern advancements in dental equipment and tools, now available, to facilitate this care.

At the heart of our dental process is the utilization of advanced scanning and imaging techniques. ("Imaging" refers to methods of taking "pictures" of your internal anatomy.) These high quality imaging technologies enable us to know exactly what treatment you may need.

Traditionally, anatomical imaging could only capture flat or two-dimensional (2D) pictures. With recent advancements, we now have 3D imaging that gives us a much better idea of what is going on inside your mouth, teeth, and even gums.

In modern dentistry, images can be captured either inside (intraoral) or outside (extraoral) the mouth. Some of our intraoral cameras are quite tiny and do not cause discomfort when used.

Here is an overview of some of our imaging techniques and technologies:

Dental X-rays Santa Barbara CA

Digital Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays can now be done "digitally" both intraorally or extraorally. These dental X-rays are also called radiographs. The digital format provides us with a much better picture of what is going on with the health of your teeth and the underlying bone than traditional X-rays. Our dentists are then better able to diagnose what treatment you may need.

Digital dental X-rays differ from the traditional X-rays (which were done with photographic film) in that a computer is used to create the image, providing a much better view of teeth, gums, and root health.

Panoramic Dental X-Rays

With panoramic dental x-rays, we use a rotating machine that takes pictures from all around your head. This captures a 3D image of the whole mouth, from the upper teeth to the bottom teeth.

These amazing comprehensive dental images can help with a number of procedures, from dental implants to wisdom teeth extractions. They are also helpful for preventative dental care and identifying tumors and cysts.

Dental CT Scan

A CT (computed tomography) scan - sometimes called a "cat scan" - is used more and more in sophisticated dental practices such as See Me Smile Dental. CT scans provide a very accurate 3D rendering of the mouth. It is an essential tool for many oral surgeries and advanced dental procedures.

A CT scan provides more detail than an X-ray because it takes pictures from different angles. We can even get a view of tooth nerves and nearby sinus cavities. The dentist will use CT scan images to look at bone density prior to moving forward with dental implants. A dental CT scan can also help detect oral cancer.

Cephalometric Projections

A special type of imaging is based on cephalometry, which is a study of the measurements of the head and cranium. Our orthodontist may use what is called a "cephalometric projection," which looks at the entire head in relation to the teeth and jaw. This can help the orthodontist plan the best method to straighten teeth and align the jaw.

Intraoral Scanner

See Me Smile Dental uses the latest in intraoral scanners to help assess your teeth and jaw. These include the iTero and TRIOS intraoral scanners (see below). The purpose of the intraoral scanner is to take digital images of the inside of your mouth to create what is called a "digital landscape." This can help in planning dental restoration work and cosmetic dentistry, including dental implants, crowns, and porcelain veneers. They are also used for orthodontic appliances such as Invisalign clear aligners.

iTero Digital Scanner

The iTero digital scanner is a specialized tool that helps create a 3D image of your teeth. This can provide a better intraoral view for dental implants, crowns, and bridges. The iTero intraoral scanner is also used to fit your Invisalign aligners. Previously, patients had to be subjected to a mold put into their mouth, which used a type of safe - but messy - putty. The putty would harden to create the mold. You can avoid this mess with the iTero digital scanner!

TRIOS Intraoral Scanner

The TRIOS intraoral scanner is an amazing little device that takes pictures of the inside of the mouth, which are then transmitted to a computer wirelessly. These images can actually be sent via a secure Internet connection to a specialty dental lab, which uses CAD (computer aided design) to make a 3D rendering. These are used to create accurate, lifelike dental restorations such as crowns or bridges.
