Sedation dentistry is gaining in popularity around the world because it promises completely comfortable dental procedures. Dr. Barkhordar is proud to offer sedation dentistry to his Santa Barbara patients, to ensure your treatment experience is as pleasant as possible.
What is sedation dentistry?
Many patients associate the dentist with deep feelings of anxiety and fear. In fact, some are so terrified that their procedures will cause pain that they stop going to the dentist altogether, and thus put their oral health in jeopardy. For these patients, sedation dentistry offers a much-needed solution.
Sedation dentistry involves using sedative agents to reduce your level of consciousness. In this state, you aren’t aware of the pain, and you may not even realize treatment is occurring. You’ll essentially feel as though you are relaxing throughout the entire procedure, making it a terrific way to reduce your anxiety and ensure a pleasant experience. Plus, many routine procedures can now be performed with sedation, including gum restoration, fixing a chipped tooth, whitening stained teeth and replacing crowns or dentures.
Is sedation dentistry right for me?
During your initial consultation in our Santa Barbara office, Dr. Barkhordar will help you determine if you’re a candidate for sedation dentistry. However, there’s a strong chance that it’s in your best interest if you:
- Have a low threshold for pain
- Possess a genuine fear and anxiety about going to the dentist
- Suffer from a poor gag reflex
- Experience highly sensitive teeth
- Are having a large amount of dental work performed
- Have a fear of needles
Types of dental sedation
The type of dental sedation used for your procedure will depend on your unique needs and anxiety levels, as well as the treatment being performed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Barkhordar will advise on which of the following four types of sedation is in your best interest.
Inhaled sedation. When you’re given inhaled sedation, you’ll inhale nitrous oxide, which is often referred to as “laughing gas,” through a mask over your nose. This gas will relive your anxiety and ensure you’re able to relax throughout the entire treatment. Because this type of sedation wears off quickly, you’ll be able to drive yourself home once the procedure is complete.
Oral sedation. There are two oral sedation options. With the first, you’ll be minimally sedated, which means you’re relaxed but awake. With the second option, you’ll be moderately sedated, which means you won’t remember much (if anything) about the procedure. In either case, you’ll be given a pill that will make you drowsy.
IV Sedation. With IV sedation, we’ll administer a drug through a vein in order to make you groggy. Most commonly used for lengthy procedures, this type of medicine works very quickly and will cause you to be moderately sedated. It’s a terrific choice because it allows Dr. Barkhordar to customize the sedation level to your unique needs.
Deep sedation. With deep sedation, you’ll be given a medication that makes you almost unconscious or entirely unconscious throughout treatment.
