Omid Barkhordar, DDS
Periodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on treating gum disease. At Dr. Barkhordar’s Santa Barbara office, he’s proud to offer the full range of treatments available to resolve this common condition – eradicating your gum disease and restoring the healthy mouth you deserve.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is a serious infection that affects your gum tissue. When plaque and tartar are not removed through regular brushing and flossing, they slowly deteriorate your teeth and damage your gums. If left untreated, gum disease can result in permanent damage to your mouth, including tooth loss.
Telltale signs of gum disease include:
- Red, puffy and tender gums
- Bleeding gums
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
- Mouth sores
- Loose teeth
- Bite changes
When gum disease is extremely mild, it’s called gingivitis. Characterized by inflammation of the gums, gingivitis precedes full-blown gum disease and is highly reversible and treatable. When you’re in the gingivitis stage, your gums will be irritated, but there’s been no irreversible bone loss or tissue damage yet. However, swift treatment is critical, otherwise the damage will continue to progress into periodontitis, the more severe stage of gum disease.
What to expect during gum disease treatment
Dr. Barkhordar offers a variety of gum disease treatments, depending on the stage and severity of your infection. During your initial consultation in our Santa Barbara office, he will examine your symptoms and offer personalized guidance regarding which of the following procedures will best resolve your condition and restore your optimal oral health.
Scaling and root planing
This non-surgical treatment is a traditional and very effective way to address gum disease. It involves cleaning in between the gums and teeth to eliminate tartar, stop the progression of the infection and heal your gums. During this treatment, Dr. Barkhordar will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area and prevent you from experiencing any discomfort. From there, he will use a special ultrasonic tool to thoroughly clean the area. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, you may require more than one session to completely resolve your condition.
If you suffer from severe gum disease and you’ve lost bone to the condition, you may require a more aggressive bone grafting procedure. This treatment involves replacing the bone that was destroyed by the disease with tiny pieces of your own bone, donated bone or synthetic materials. These grafts encourage new bone to grow and provide much-needed stability for your teeth.
Soft tissue grafting
This procedure is commonly used for patients who are experiencing receding gums as a result of their periodontal disease. It involves using grafted tissue from the roof of the mouth to fill in receded areas and reinforce gums that are slowly wearing away. In this way, Dr. Barkhordar can prevent your gums from receding further, resolve any sensitivity and restore an appealing cosmetic look. Though the entire procedure will be completely pain-free, there will be some discomfort as your wounds heal. However, it will be manageable with the pain medication prescribed by Dr. Barkhordar.
