Gum Recession Treatment

Not only do receding gums have a negative impact on your cosmetic appearance, but if left untreated they can also lead to tooth loss. Fortunately, Dr. Barkhordar offers rapid and extremely effective treatments for this common condition, restoring your beautiful smile and your gum health.

 What is gum recession?

Gum recession develops when the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth wears away, exposing more of the tooth and creating gaps in between the tooth and gumline. Bacteria and debris then accumulate inside these spaces, which can lead to serious complications, including tooth loss. Because receding gums can cause irreversible damage, they need to be treated as quickly as possible.

What causes receding gums?

A variety of lifestyle, hygiene and hereditary factors can cause the gums to recede. But the good news is that there are treatments available to correct the issue and restore your oral health – regardless of the cause. With that said, the most common causes of receding gums include:

Genetics

The health of your gums is largely influenced by your genetics. If your parents suffered from receding gums, you’re at a higher risk for the condition as well.

Hormonal changes

When women go through certain life experiences, like puberty, pregnancy and menopause, their varying hormone levels can cause their gums to become more sensitive, which makes them more susceptible to recession.

Bite problems

Crooked or protruding teeth can place an unbalanced amount of pressure on certain teeth, making the attached gums more likely to recede.

Gum disease

One of the main causes of receding gums, gum disease is caused by poor oral hygiene that ultimately damages the bone and gum tissue.

Aggressive brushing

If you brush your teeth with too much force, you can cause the enamel to wear and your gums to recede over time.

Teeth grinding

Routine grinding and clenching can place an exorbitant amount of pressure on the teeth, causing the gums to recede.

How are receding gums treated?

Treatment for your receding gums will depend on the severity of the issue. For example, if you’re only mildly affected, you likely won’t require a professional procedure. Instead, Dr. Barkhordar will provide personalized guidance on how you can resolve the problem naturally. These instructions will likely include steps such as:

  • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Eating foods like oranges, broccoli and cauliflower can reduce inflammation and enhance gum regeneration.
  • Rinse your mouth after eating. To keep your gums clean and healthy, Dr. Barkhordar may instruct you to swish water around your mouth after eating to clear away any food particles that may be stuck in between the teeth.
  • Proper oral hygiene. Taking care of your teeth is critical when it comes to preventing receding gums. In addition to gently brushing your teeth in a circular motion twice a day, you’ll also need to brush along the gums to eliminate bacteria that can lead to gingivitis. It’s also important to floss daily to remove plaque around the gums and in between the teeth.

If you suffer from more severe receding gums, you may require treatment that goes beyond the homecare steps listed above. In this case, Dr. Barkhordar will compose a more aggressive treatment plan designed to resolve the issue. This may include scaling and root planing to address your gum disease, or a gum graft surgery to cover the exposed surfaces, protect your teeth and enhance the appearance of your smile.
