Gum irrigation is a very common treatment that’s used to address gum pockets that develop due to poor oral hygiene. The procedure involves clearing away debris and bacteria that hides underneath your gums and in between your teeth to restore your optimal oral health.
What are gum pockets?
In a healthy mouth, the gums fit tightly around the teeth. When gum disease sets in, however, deeper spaces called “gum pockets” can develop. These pockets typically form when individuals fail to clean their gums properly for a prolonged period of time. As gum pockets deepen, they provide the perfect space for tarter and plaque to build up, exacerbating the issue. If left untreated, gum pockets can lead to tooth and bone loss, which is why it’s so important to receive an early diagnosis and rapid treatment to prevent complications from occurring.
The gum irrigation procedure
If Dr. Barkhordar determines that you suffer from gum pockets, he will compose a customized treatment plan to resolve the issue. He’ll want to thoroughly clean the area immediately to eradicate any infection and prevent complications from developing. To accomplish this, he’ll recommend one of the following types of gum irrigation: supragingival irrigation or subgingival irrigation.
With supragingival irrigation, liquid will be dispelled from above the gums to clear bacteria away. In this way, the treatment can prevent debris from building up and finding its way into the gum pocket. With subgingival irrigation, liquid will be dispersed inside the gum pocket, eliminating debris that has accumulated in that area. This will remove all dirt from the gum pocket and restore your optimal oral health. Each technique uses mineral water streams combined with chemical substances that are dispersed into the mouth to loosen contaminants, decrease inflammation, stop gum bleeding and improve your gum health.
Regardless of the approach used, your treatment will begin with a thorough cleaning of your teeth. Dr. Barkhordar will then perform either supragingival irrigation or subgingival irrigation to carefully remove the tartar and plaque that has built up on the surface of your teeth and underneath your gums, so the area can heal, inflammation can decrease and your gums can tighten around the teeth once again.
How to prevent gum pockets
Once your gum irrigation treatment is complete, Dr. Barkhordar will offer guidance on how you can prevent gum pockets from forming again. The good news is that gum disease and gum pockets are highly preventable with the proper care.
To begin, you’ll need to follow a strict regimen at home, which will include brushing your teeth with a soft toothbrush twice a day, delicately cleaning your gumline where plaque has a tendency to build up, flossing once a day and replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. In addition, it’s critical that you maintain your dental visits to our Santa Barbara office every six months, so Dr. Barkhordar can identify and intervene to fix any potential problems as quickly as possible. These are all very important steps that will prevent gum disease and preserve your oral health for years to come.
