When is emergency dental work necessary?
It can be challenging to recognize a dental emergency when it’s happening to you. As such, here are the most common issues that will warrant an emergency visit to our office:
Damaged dental work
Damaged dental work, such as a missing filling or crown, is a common dental emergency. When such damage occurs, it can expose the ultra sensitive root of the tooth, leading to immense physical pain that can only be resolved by a visit to the dentist.
Damage to a tooth
Any time your tooth is damaged or cracked, you will require an emergency visit to our office. This is especially true of a knocked out tooth, in which case immediate care will drastically increase the odds that we are able to save and restore your natural tooth.
Severe gum pain
Gum pain that is particularly severe has a couple of different causes, and they all require immediate attention by a dental professional. If you are unsure if your gum pain qualifies as severe, please do not hesitate to contact our office and we will help you determine if you should be seen right away.
Intense tooth pain
If you are experiencing intense tooth pain, it could be caused by severe cavities, an exposed root or a broken tooth – three situations that can create debilitating pain and need to be evaluated by a professional right away.
How to handle a dental emergency
How you behave during a dental emergency will influence the outcome in profound ways. As such, it’s important to be prepared in advance, so you know how to act if you ever find yourself in such an emergency. With that said, here are three very common dental emergencies – and exactly how to respond to them:
Your tooth is knocked out
This is a delicate situation that requires precise and immediate attention. To begin, you’ll need to hold the tooth by the crown and gently rinse the root with clean water, being careful to preserve all tissue. From there, store the tooth in a cup of milk or place it in the empty socket until your appointment with Dr. Barkhordar.
Your tooth is chipped or broken
In this case, you’ll want to begin by rinsing your mouth with water to clean debris away from the area. From there, place a cold compress on your face to minimize swelling.
You’re in severe pain
If you’re experiencing intense pain, your focus will be on pain relief until you arrive at our office. To that end, try rinsing your mouth with water and flossing gently to remove any trapped food that may be exacerbating the issue.
“When I knocked my tooth out, I was terrified – but Dr. Barkhordar walked me through it. He told me exactly what to do to save my tooth, and he squeezed me in for an emergency appointment that very morning. Thanks to him, my tooth and my smile were saved.”
