Dental checkups are a vital part of achieving beautiful teeth and preserving your optimal oral health. During these routine visits, Dr. Barkhordar and his team will clean your teeth, examine your mouth and ensure your healthy smile lasts a lifetime.
Why are dental check-ups so important?
Few actions have a greater impact on your oral health than having your teeth professionally cleaned and examined on a regular basis. These visits give Dr. Barkhordar the opportunity to identify early signs of decay and address issues as quickly as possible – before serious complications develop.
In addition, it’s also your chance to have your teeth thoroughly cleaned in a way that’s simply not possible at home. Dr. Barkhordar has access to powerful tools that can remove plaque and tarter that hide on your teeth and cause decay over time. Your toothbrush can’t do that – no matter how diligent you are. If you miss these visits, the plaque and tarter will continue to accumulate and damage your teeth – and you’ll inevitably require a complex corrective procedure to fix the problem. And finally, your dental checkup allows Dr. Barkhordar to identify issues that are not visible to the naked eye, but can cause serious problems if left untreated. In short, your dental checkup is one of the best ways to make sure your teeth, mouth and gums are healthy – so you don’t want to miss it.
What to expect during your dental checkup
When your first arrive at our Santa Barbara office, your dental checkup will begin with a deep cleaning by one of our friendly and highly-trained dental hygienists. To start this process, we will carefully scrape tartar off your teeth using a small metal tool. We will then floss your teeth to remove debris, before polishing them with fluoride and other elements to eliminate plaque and stains.
From there, Dr. Barkhordar will take x-rays so he can thoroughly examine your teeth and gums. These images make it easier to identify tooth decay, cavities, incoming wisdom teeth and any orthodontic problems. While your x-rays are being taken, you’ll wear a heavy apron to protect your body, and you’ll bite down on a piece of plastic while we take images of your teeth from various angles.
Once your cleaning is complete and your x-rays have been collected, Dr. Barkhordar will examine your teeth. From there, the process will depend on your unique risk factors and overall oral health. For example, if Dr. Barkhordar determines that you’re at a heightened risk for decay, he may apply a sealant to your teeth to prevent food and bacteria from accumulating and causing cavities to form. If tooth decay or gum disease is already present, he will recommend customized treatments and discuss ways you can improve your oral health through routine brushing and flossing.
How often do I need a dental checkup?
Because dental checkups are so important when it comes to catching problems early, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends having them twice a year, or every six months. However, if you have certain risk factors, you may need to visit our Santa Barbara office every three to four months. For example, if you’re pregnant, diabetic, a smoker, or you have current gum disease, a weak immune system and/or a history of cavities, you may require more frequent dental checkups.
