A dental bridge is a tried-and-true way to replace missing teeth. It involves inserting a prosthetic tooth and placing crowns on your healthy teeth on either side of the gap. In this way, the crowns and your natural teeth provide an anchor for the replacement – creating an attractive and durable new smile.
What are the benefits of a dental bridge?
A dental bridge comes with a wide range of appealing benefits, including the ability to:
- Improve your smile
- Enhance your facial appearance
- Restore a proper bite
- Reduce damage to your teeth from a misaligned bite
- Provide long-lasting results
Types of dental bridges
Not all dental bridges are created equal. There are a few different types available, and Dr. Barkhordar will help you determine which one is in your best interest during your initial consultation at our Santa Barbara office.
Traditional bridges are by far the most common type of dental bridge. Comprised of porcelain that is fused to ceramic or metal, they require using a prosthetic tooth and dental implant to replace your missing tooth, and creating crowns for the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. In this way, a traditional bridge creates a durable repair that restores your healthy smile.
Maryland bonded bridges
Also known as resin-bonded bridges, Maryland bonded bridges are made of plastic, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, and they’re supported by a porcelain or metal framework. Wings comprised of resin are then placed on either side of the bridge, rather than crowns, to support the restoration. The main benefit of this option is it requires less alterations to your surrounding teeth when compared to other types of bridges.
With a cantilever bridge, Dr. Barkhordar will place a crown on only one adjacent tooth to support the restoration. This option is not recommended for patients who are replacing teeth located in the back of the mouth, as it’s a more delicate solution that’s more prone to damage in this area.
The dental bridge procedure
Receiving your dental bridge is a multi-step process. To begin, you’ll visit our Santa Barbara office for an initial appointment so Dr. Barkhordar can prepare your mouth for the procedure. To begin, he’ll reshape the adjacent teeth to prepare them for crowns, before taking digital impressions of your mouth so your bridge can be designed. While we are creating your custom bridge, we’ll place a temporary one to protect your mouth, prevent damage to the adjacent teeth and restore your appearance.
If you’re having a traditional bridge placed with dental implants, we will also take x-rays and a CT scan of the jaw to ensure an adequate amount of bone volume is present for the procedure. From there, Dr. Barkhordar will numb your gums, create tiny incisions in the tissue and place implant posts in your jawbone. You will then heal for a period of four to six months so the implant posts can fuse to your bone and create a strong foundation for the bridge.
Once the bridge has been created and your implants have healed, you will return to the office to have your bridge inserted. At that time, Dr. Barkhordar will place the crowns on your adjacent teeth and secure your restoration – unveiling the bright and beautiful smile you deserve.
