Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a powerful way to improve the appearance of a stained, discolored or chipped smile. It involves applying specialized materials to the teeth and hardening them with a light, covering up unsightly imperfections and restoring bright and healthy teeth.

Benefits of dental bonding

When performed by a vastly experienced dentist like Santa Barbara’s Dr. Omid Barkhordar, dental bonding can accomplish a wide range of benefits for your smile, including:

  1. Fix decayed teeth
  2. Correct chipped teeth
  3. Whiten stained or discolored teeth
  4. Lengthen short teeth
  5. Achieve a more attractive tooth shape

Is dental bonding right for you?

Dental bonding is a terrific way to restore a bright, straight and healthy smile – but it’s not the only option. Crowns and veneers are also able to deliver an impeccable smile makeover, so determining whether dental bonding is right for you will require weighing the advantages and disadvantages of all three procedures.

When compared to veneers and crowns, dental bonding is more affordable and easier to perform. And, unlike veneers and crowns, the procedure involves the removal of a very small amount of tooth enamel. With that said, veneers and crowns are known to stain less than the material used for dental bonding, and they’re more durable and long-lasting. During your initial consultation, Dr. Omid Barkhordar will carefully assess your needs, lifestyle and tooth imperfections, to help you determine which of these cosmetic dental procedures will best achieve the beautiful and healthy mouth you deserve.

The dental bonding procedure

In most cases, dental bonding can be performed without anesthesia, making it an extremely convenient procedure. To begin, Dr. Barkhordar will examine the tooth being treated with a shade guide. This allows him to select materials that are the closest match to the color of your teeth. He will then etch the surface of the tooth being treated to prepare it for the procedure.

From there, Dr. Barkhordar will apply a special conditioning liquid, which is designed to enhance the bonding material. He will then carefully place the tooth-colored resin, expertly molding it to ensure it looks as natural as possible and blends in with your other teeth. From there, he’ll place a powerful light over the tooth for one to two minutes to bond the material, before performing some final shaping to ensure an impeccable final outcome.

Caring for your bonded teeth

After your dental bonding procedure, your teeth will require special care moving forward. To begin, you’ll want to follow optimal oral hygiene – brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing once a day and visiting your dentist for regular check-ups and deep cleanings.

It’s also important to note that the bonding material does have a tendency to chip. As such, it’s important to avoid biting your nails, eating hard foods and chewing on pens to ensure your teeth are protected. As long as you follow these guidelines, you can expect your bonding materials to endure between three and ten years, at which point they’ll need to be retouched to maintain your flawless smile.
