A very common restorative procedure, crown lengthening is a minor surgery that’s used to prepare the mouth for the placement of crowns. It’s designed to reveal more of the natural tooth above the gum, so the new crown has adequate space to grip.
Benefits of crown lengthening
Because few patients have heard of crown lengthening, they’re not aware of the immense aesthetic, functional and health benefits the procedure offers. Crown lengthening is so important because it provides:
By giving your crown more tooth to grip, the procedure creates a more durable restoration and promotes the stability of the crown.
Optimal oral health
For patients who suffer from decay, periodontal disease and trauma, the procedure can restore optimal oral health as it prepares the mouth for restorative and cosmetic dental treatments. It can also lessen the risk of periodontal infections moving forward.
An enhanced cosmetic appearance
When patients have a “gummy” smile, the teeth look unnaturally short because they’re hidden by excess gum tissue. In this case, crown lengthening can eliminate the unwanted tissue to reveal more of the natural teeth.
The crown lengthening procedure
Before your crown lengthening procedure can begin, we’ll have you visit our Santa Barbara office for an initial appointment. During that meeting, we will review your medical history, collect x-rays and develop a customized surgical plan. To prepare your mouth for surgery, we will also perform a deep cleaning and place temporary crowns over your teeth.
The actual procedure will be performed under local anesthesia, which means you’ll be awake but unable to feel anything in the area. To begin, Dr. Barkhordar will make a series of precise incisions to pull the gums away from the teeth. In this way, he’ll gain access to the roots of your teeth and the surrounding bone. In rare cases, he’ll only need to remove a very small amount of gum tissue to expose an adequate amount of tooth. However, most patients also require the removal of some bone to ensure an ideal result.
Once sufficient gum and bone have been removed, Dr. Barkhordar will clean the area using sterile salt water. He will then close the incisions and place bandages to protect your mouth and ensure an optimal healing process.
After surgery, Dr. Barkhordar will prescribe pain medication to help you manage any discomfort you may experience. During the initial recovery period, you’ll need to avoid using straws, playing with the area and eating foods that are extremely hot or cold. For the first few days, it’s normal to experience some swelling and bruising in the area, however you can minimize these effects by regularly applying ice wrapped in a soft towel.
In most cases, the area should heal completely within just three months. In the meantime, it’s important to adopt a soft-food diet to ensure your comfort and promote an optimal healing process. Common foods our Santa Barbara patients eat during their recoveries include soups, pasta, scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes. It’s important to avoid anything that could potentially harm your gums during this time, such as sticky, hard, spicy and acidic food and drinks.
