Composite Fillings

When you have a cavity, a hole needs to be created in the tooth to remove the decay. Once the damage has been eliminated, fillings are used to occupy the hole, preserving the function and health of your tooth. Dr. Omid Barkhordar uses tooth-colored composite fillings to restore decayed teeth – producing a completely discreet final outcome.

The evolution of dental fillings

In the not-too-distant past, cavities were treated with a silver filling that was comprised of a variety of materials, including mercury, copper and silver-tin alloy. And although these fillings were very effective in fixing the decay, they also produced an unsightly gray color on the treated teeth. This was highly visible to the eye, and resulted in an undesirable aesthetic effect.

Today, there’s a better option. At Dr. Barkhordar’s Santa Barbara office, we favor tooth-colored composite fillings that are comprised of colorants, quartz fillers and acrylic plastic. Once in place, they bond to the affected teeth and are virtually invisible to the eye, producing a more attractive cosmetic outcome.

Benefits of composite fillings

There’s a reason Dr. Barkhordar prefers to treat cavities with tooth-colored composite fillings. They come with a variety of cosmetic and functional benefits, including:

Enhanced aesthetic appearance

Dr. Barkhordar can match the shade of the fillings to your teeth, ensuring a discreet and natural result.

Improved support

Because composite filings bond to your existing teeth, they provide substantial support.

Highly versatile

Not only can composite fillings be used to treat tooth decay, they can also correct teeth that are chipped, broken or worn down.

Preserve more of your natural tooth

In many cases, composite fillings require Dr. Barkhordar to remove less of your tooth when eliminating the decay and preparing the structure for a filling.

What to expect during your procedure

You will receive your composite fillings during a single visit to our Santa Barbara office. The first step of this process involves treating your decay and preparing the affected tooth for the restoration. To begin, Dr. Barkhordar will numb the tooth to ensure you feel no pain, before removing the decay with a traditional dental tool or laser. He will then cleanse the area to ensure it is completely clear of debris and bacteria.

Next, Dr. Barkhordar will isolate the tooth to prevent moisture from interfering with the final steps of the procedure. He will then place a special adhesive on the prepared tooth, along with the composite material. From there, he will apply a special bonding light over the tooth, hardening the composite material and completing your functional and natural-looking restoration. Immediately after your procedure, you can expect to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold, though it will subside fairly quickly as your tooth adjusts to the filling.

Aftercare

Once your cavity has been filled, Dr. Barkhordar will review important aftercare guidelines with you. You’ll want to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and visit our Santa Barbara office every six months for routine check-ups and deep cleanings. If it is determined that you’re at a heightened risk for cavities, Dr. Barkhordar may also recommend placing sealants over your molars to prevent decay. It’s important that you follow Dr. Barkhordar’s instructions precisely, as they are designed to preserve your oral health and prevent new cavities from forming.
