Get a Beautiful, Straight Smile with Braces
Braces have been around since the early 1800s. They have been the traditional solution for straightening teeth that are overcrowded or teeth that have too much space between them. Braces also are used to correct underbites, overbites, and crossbites.
When your teeth have any of these problems, they create an unhealthy oral health problem. Teeth that are not straight are harder to keep clean, inviting more tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. A poor bite can also affect a person’s health, as chewing becomes a problem, making it so he may not get proper nutrition.
At See Me Smile, Dr. Barkhordar can provide orthodontic services to give you a beautiful, straight smile. If braces are needed, Dr. Barkhordar will advise you as to which teeth straightening system will be best for your individual oral situation.
Different Types of Braces
Braces all work by applying gentle, gradual pressure to teeth via a combination of brackets and wires. This constant pressure gradually moves teeth into the desired position.
These types of braces have been the traditional means of straightening teeth for many years. Metal brackets are bonded to the teeth, and then wires and elastic bands are connected to the brackets. These wires and bands are tightened over time, gradually creating pressure on the brackets, which then slowly move the teeth into the proper position. In some cases, metal braces can be placed on the inside of the teeth, where they don’t show.
Kids in particular often like the different colors of the elastic bands from which they can choose. Leave it to kids to change a “metal mouth” to one that suits their personality. Every time the patient comes in for an adjustment, a different color can be chosen. Or the choice might be alternating colors, such as red and green for the holidays, or black and orange for Halloween. So those days of grey metal braces as the only choice are gone!
Adjustments to traditional braces needs to occur periodically, such as every 30 days or so. The average time for a person to wear metal braces is 2 to 2 ½ years. Financially, metal braces are the most economical straightening system.
These are similar to metal braces except that the brackets are made of a strong ceramic material. The wires can sometimes also be clear. As a result, they are less noticeable than metal braces. A disadvantage of ceramic versus metal braces is that ceramic braces can stain when certain foods or beverages are consumed. They are also a bit more expensive than metal. But with the right care, they are a great alternative to metal braces if you are concerned about how they look.
Life After Braces
Once braces are removed, it’s likely patients will need to wear a retainer, usually full time for a period determined by Dr. Barkhordar, and then part time for a while. This helps the newly positioned teeth stay aligned while the bone surrounding the teeth further integrates around them. This period can last months, even years. If an adult is getting braces, it may be necessary to wear a retainer part time, often while sleeping. Teeth can become misaligned again as one ages. At the same time, some patients’ newly aligned teeth will stay that way for life without a retainer. Dr. Barkhordar will be able to determine what your individual needs are.
